1. General names

Chinese: The boobies (or gannets) are known as 'bonito birds' (鲣鸟 jiān-niǎo) in Chinese for their habit of flocking above shoals of bonito. It seems likely that the name was borrowed from the Japanese.

Japanese: The Japanese name for the boobies/gannets is カツオドリ katsuo-dori, also meaning 'bonito bird' and written with the same characters as Chinese (鰹鳥).

Vietnamese: The Vietnamese name for the booby is Chim điên, meaning 'crazy bird' or 'insane bird'.
