ミミヨタカ科 Mimi

Họ Cú muỗi mào)
(Note: Some CJV Family and subfamily names under Monroe and Sibley are only tentative at this stage)
Sibley-Monroe have separated the eared nightjars (Eurostopodidae) from the nightjars (Caprimulgidae), but in all three languages, as in English, the two groups share the same name. In deciding on the family name Eurostopodidae, for Chinese I have used the family name from M&P. The Japanese family name is based on the Japanese for 'eared nightjar'. The name ヒゲナシヨタカ科 hige-nashi yo-taka ka ('beardless night hawks', in characters 髭なし夜鷹科) can be found on the Internet. The Vietnamese family name, based on the Vietnamese name for Eurostopodus macrotis, needs to be confirmed. |
In Chinese, the Great eared nightjar (Eurostopodus macrotis) is called 毛腿夜鹰 máo-tuǐ yè-ying or 'hair-legged night hawk'. M&P modify this to 毛腿耳夜鹰 máo-tuǐ ěr-yè-yīng 'hair-legged eared night hawk' to reflect the fact that the 'eared' nightjars are now separate from the other nightjars. |
In Japanese, the eared nightjars are called ミミヨタカ mimi yo-taka or 'eared night hawks', written 耳夜鷹 in Chinese characters. The Eurostopodidae are not found in Japan. |
The Vietnamese word for 'nightjar' is Cú muỗi, literally 'mosquito owl'. Eurostopodus macrotis is known as Cú muỗi mào, 'crested mosquito owl'. |
The distribution of the Eurostopodidae in East Asia can be seen at Tzung-Su Ding's Distribution of STRIGIFORMES in East Asia. |
