1. General names

Chinese: In Chinese, the flamingo is usually known as the 火烈鸟 huǒ-liè-niǎo 'fire-intense bird'. However, naturalists call them 红鹳 hóng-guàn, or 'red storks'. Other names are 红鹤 hóng-hè ('red crane') and 火鹤 huǒ-hè ('fire crane').
Japanese: Japanese has borrowed the English word for flamingo, フラミンゴ furamingo. They are not found in Japan.
Vietnamese: The Vietnamese word for 'flamingo' is Chim hồng hạc, or 'rosy crane bird'. Flamingoes are not found in Vietnam.
