Chinese: The frogmouths have a confusing variety of names that differ according to the source: 蟆口鸱 má-kǒu-chī or 'toad-mouthed owl', 蛙口鸱 wā-kǒu-chī 'frog-mouthed owl', 蛙嘴鸱 wā-zuǐ chī 'frog-mouthed owl', 蛙嘴夜鸱 wā-zuǐ yè-chī 'frog-mouthed night owl', or 蛙嘴夜鹰 wā-zuǐ yè-yīng 'frog-mouthed night hawk' . 鸱 chī is a literary Chinese word that originally referred to the goshawks but is now applied to the owls. None of these names is familiar or common; they give the appearance of having been coined on the basis of English 'frogmouth'. |
