Muscicapidae

Under Sibley and Monroe, the Muscicipinae, along with the Turdinae, form the family Muscicapidae, containing the Old World Flycatchers and their allies. Sibley and Monroe divide the Muscicapinae into the Muscicapini and Saxicolini tribes.

1. General names

Chinese:

鹟 wēng is used for the flycatchers (Muscicapinae). It usually forms part of a larger word, seldom (if ever) occurring alone.

鸲 qú is the official name given to the robins (Erithacus /Luscinia). However, this does not appear to be a traditional name for the birds (see Notes).

Popularly, 靛颏儿 diànkér is used for two types of robin:

• 红靛颏儿 hóng diànkér ('red dianker') for Luscinia calliope
• 蓝靛颏儿 lán diànkér (blue dianker) for Luscinia svecica.

These names are probably a corruption of 红点颏 hóng diǎn kē 'red-dot chin' and 蓝点颏 lán diǎn kē 'blue-dot chin' and it is common to see the corrected form in writing. Both are popular cage birds in China.

燕尾 yàn-wěi 'swallow-tails' is the name given to the forktails.

jí is the official name of the chats and wheatears in Mainland China. It's not clear why this has been applied to the chats; jí is traditionally an alternative form of the character 鹡 jí ('wagtail').

Japanese names of the flycatchers are as follows:

ヒタキ hitaki	鶲	Name for the flycatchers (Muscicapini), applied also to many of the Saxolini, including the bush robins, redstarts, chats, and wheatears. The Daurian redstart (Phoenicurus auroreus) is ジョウビタキ jō-bitaki, variously written 尉鶲, 常鶲, or 上鶲. The stonechat (Saxicola maura/Saxicola torquata) is ノビタキ no-bitaki ('field flycatcher'), written 野鶲.
ムギマキ mugi-maki 'wheat-sower'	麦蒔き or 麦播き	Distinctive name for the Mugimaki flycatcher (Ficedula mugimaki).
イソヒヨドリ iso-hiyo-dori 'rock bulbul'	磯鵯	The rock thrushes (Monticola): derives from a surface resemblance to the bulbuls.
ルリ ruri 'lapis lazuli'	瑠璃 or 琉璃	Two types of bird: The Blue-and-white flycatcher (Cyanoptila cyanomelana/Ficedula cyanomela), a member of the Muscicapini, is known as the オオルリ ō ruri ('large lapis lazuli'). Erithacus cyane, a member of the Saxolini, is known as a コルリ ko-ruri ('small lapis lazuli')
コマ koma 'horse' or 'pony'	駒	Robins, e.g., コマドリ koma-dori (駒鳥) = Erithacus akahige and ノゴマ no-goma (野駒) = Luscinia calliope/Erithacus calliope. Koma means 'horse' or 'pony'. The name is said to derive from the resemblance of the koma-dori 's call to the whinnying of a horse
アカヒゲ aka-hige 'red beard'	赤髭	The name given to Erithacus komadori.
シキチョウ shiki-chō 'four-season bird'	四季鳥	Used for members of Copsychus and Enicurus, none of which are found in Japan. Used where Vietnamese uses the word Chích chòe.

Vietnamese:

Đớp ruồi, which quite literally means 'catch-fly', is applied to all members of the Muscicapinae.

Oanh is the name given to the robins. This word was originally borrowed from the Chinese yīng (鶯) meaning 'warbler'.

Đuôi đỏ or 'red-tails' is the name given to the redstarts (Phoenicurus and others).

Chích chòe or Chim chích chòe is used for the Magpie robin (Copsychus saularis) and the forktails (Enicurus). An alternative name for the forktails given by some non-specialist dictionaries is Chim bù chao.

Sẻ bụi, literally 'bush sparrow', is the name given to the stonechats and bushchats.
