The only subfamily of Nectariniidae represented in Asia is the Nectariniinae. Under Sibley-Monroe, this subfamily subsumes what Howard-Moore consider separate families, the Dicaeidae (flowerpeckers) and Nectariniidae (sunbirds and spider hunters). |
1. General names
Chinese: This group of birds is found only in the far south of China. The sunbirds are known as 太阳鸟 'sun-bird'. Some members of the Nectariinii (namely, members of Hypogramma and Nectarinia) are known as 花蜜鸟 'nectar bird'. The spider hunters are known as 捕蛛鸟 'catch-spider-bird'.
Japanese: None of the Nectariniidae are found in Japan. The sunbirds are known as タイヨウチョウ taiyō-chō 'sun-bird', written 太陽鳥, the same name as in Chinese. Occasionally seen is the English form サンバード san-bādo 'sunbird'. The spider hunters are known as クモカリドリ kumo-kari-dori 'spider-hunting birds', written in Chinese characters as 蜘蛛狩り鳥.
Vietnamese: The Nectariniidae are found extensively in Vietnam. The sunbirds are known as Hút mật or 'honey/nectar suckers'. The spider hunters are known as Bắp chuối, meaning literally 'banana flower'.
