The Phasianidae include: the pheasants, partridges, quails, francolin, tragopans, snowcocks, peafowl, ptarmigans, and grouse. The Phasianidae are important sources of game and domesticated birds. The world's domestic fowl are descended from a member of this family.

1. General names

Chinese:

China is rich in pheasants and so is the language, although the average modern Chinese is likely to know only the peafowl, the quail, and the common barnyard fowl.

The ordinary word for 'fowl' ( ) is most commonly used for the Phasianiadae, as summarised below. Many, however, are specialist rather than popular names. In fact, layman often simply call pheasants 'fowl' or 野鸡 yě-jī 'wild fowl'.

The other common name is zhì, meaning 'pheasant', used for the Common pheasant itself and in names such as:

Other names are:

鹌鹑 ān-chun for the quails (shortened to chún in some words) .

鹧鸪 zhègū for the Chinese francolin and many of the hill partridges.

xián for the Silver pheasant and others.

孔雀 kǒng-què for the Peafowl.

雷鸟 lěi-niǎo 'thunder bird' for the grouse or ptarmigan.

Japanese:

The general name for 'pheasants' is キジ kiji (written or 雉子 in Chinese characters), which normally refers in its unmarked form to Phasianus colchicus, the Common pheasant. The following are not normally considered to be キジ kiji:

ウズラ uzura, written , refers to the 'quails'.

シャコ shako, written 鷓鴣, is from Chinese word zhègū. シャコ shako is mainly applied to several types of partridge.

ニワトリ niwa-tori, literally 'garden bird', written , is the domesticated fowl. The meat of this bird is usually known as tori-niku, or 'bird meat'.

Vietnamese:

Vietnamese has a range of words for the Phasianidae, many featuring the word ('fowl'), also the name of the domestic fowl (con gà).

Oher words for the Phasianidae include:

Đa đa, another name for the Chinese francolin.

Cay, 'quail', possibly a borrowing from the French 'quaille'. A naturalist's word not found in normal Vietnamese dictionaries. (In ordinary speech, the quails are Cun cút. Some dictionaries list Chim giải as another word for 'quail'.)

Trĩ, from Chinese zhì, used for the Common pheasant and the Crested argus.

Công or Cuông, used for the Peacock.
