Under Sibley and Monroe, the Prunellidae are a subfamily of the Passeridae. Other subfamilies are the Passerinae (sparrows and snowfinches), Motacillinae (wagtails and pipits), Ploceinae (weavers), and Estrildinae (munias, etc.) |
1. General names
Chinese: In Chinese, the accentors are called 岩鹨 or 'rock pipits' (pronounced in Taiwan).
Japanese: In Japan, there are three main species of Prunellidae.
The general term for the accentors is イワヒバリ iwa-hibari or 'rock lark', 岩雲雀 or 岩鷚 in Chinese characters. Unmarked, the イワヒバリ iwa-hibari refers to Prunella collaris.
The Mountain or Siberian accentor is known as the ヤマヒバリ yama-hibari 'mountain skylark', 山雲雀 in Chinese characters.
Like the Dunnock in English, the Japanese Accentor has its own special name of カヤクグリ kaya-kuguri, written 萱潜 or 茅潜 in characters. Despite the impression of a bird winding its way through a thicket of kaya or miscanthus grass, in fact the Japanese Accentor lives in high montane pine forests.
Vietnamese: The Prunellidae are not found in Vietnam.
