1. General names

Chinese: The bulbuls are known in Chinese as 鹎 bēi. The most commonly seen bulbul, the Chinese bulbul (Pycnonotus sinensis), is popularly known as the 白头翁 bái-tóu wēng or 'white-headed old man'.

Japanese: Two bulbuls are found in Japan. The Chestnut-eared bulbul (Ixos amaurotis) is known as the ヒヨドリ hiyo-dori, written 鵯 in Chinese characters. The Chinese bulbul (Pycnonotus sinensis) is known as the シロガシラ shiro-gashira ('white head'), written 白頭 in Chinese characters.

Vietnamese: Vietnamese has three separate names for the bulbuls. Only the first is listed in ordinary Vietnamese dictionaries.

Chào mào is the name of the 'Red-whiskered bulbul' (Pycnonotus jocosus). The name is also applied to Spizixos (finchbills) and several other birds belonging to Pycnonotus.

Bông lau is used for most members of Pycnonotus (excepting those known as Chào mào).

Cành cạch is used for birds originally classified under Criniger and Hypsipetes by Howard-Moore.

3. Notes

1. The popular name for the Chinese bulbul is 白头翁 bái-tóu wēng ('white-headed old man'), referring to the white patch on the nape which becomes even whiter as the bird gets older. The popular name is officially used by naturalists in Taiwan. Mainland ornithologists have dropped it in favour of the more regular 白头鹎 bái-tóu bēi ('white-headed bulbul').

The Chinese 白头翁 bái-tóu wēng should not be confused with the Japanese 白頭翁, read hakutō-ō, which refers to the Grey or White-cheeked starling (Sturnus cineraceus).

2. There has been some limited systematisation of the Chinese names. 冠鹎 guàn-bēi ('crested bulbul') is used for the genus Alophoixus. 短脚鹎 duǎn-jiǎo-bēi ('short-legged bulbul') is used for the old Hypsipetes genus, now four genera.

3. The Japanese ヒヨドリ hiyo-dori is also known as ヒヨ hiyo. The -dori, of course, is from tori meaning 'bird'. Both hiyo-dori and hiyo are written 鵯.
