3. Notes

The distribution of the Sturnidae in East Asia can be seen at Tzung-Su Ding's Distribution of STURNIDAE in East Asia.

1. The treatment of Acridotheres is confused.

  • A. grandis in the table is classed by M&P (Yunnan, China) as A. cinereus grandis (White-vented myna), with the note that it has been treated as A. fuscus but is more likely cospecific with A. javanicus and A. grandis. The Chinese name given is 林八哥 lín bā-gē 'forest bage', with 白臀八哥 bái tún bā-gē 'white-vented bage' as an alternative.
  • Nguyen, Le & Phillipps (Vietnam) also class it as A. cinereus. (However, the Vietnamese name, Sáo mỏ vàng 'golden-billed sao', is the same as that of A. grandis in Vo Quy & Nguyen Cu).
  • The Atlas of Birds of China gives A. (? fuscus) grandis.
  • Howard and Moore (2003) do not rule out the possibility that A. javanicus, A. cinereus and A. fuscus are one species, A. cinereus.
For detailed information on distinctions among species, see this Chinese (traditional) site on the Question of the Mynas.

2. The Japanese alternative name for S. cineraceus, ハクトウオウ hakutō-ō, written 白頭翁, should not be confused with the Chinese bird 白头翁 bái-tóu-wēng, written with the same characters. 白头翁 bái-tóu-wēng refers to Pycnonotus sinensis, the Chinese bulbul.
