Under Sibley and Monroe, the ranks of the Sylviidae have been swelled by the addition of almost the entire Timaliidae family. The majority of the Timaliidae are placed in the formerly small Sylviinae subfamily to form the huge Timaliini tribe. (The original Sylviinae form a second tribe, the Sylviini). The genera Garrulax and Liocichla are placed in a new subfamily, the Garrulacinae.

From the Aegithalidae, Sibley and Monroe also assign Leptopoecile to the Sylviidae.

1. General names

Chinese: All members of the family are known in Chinese as yīng, a form which is not likely to be found on its own, especially in speech, where yīng is normally understood as 'eagle' ( yīng). The 'common names' used by naturalists have been heavily systematised.

Some more common birds have rather colloquial popular names, especially cage birds such as Acrocephalus orientalis.

Japanese: The most famous member of the family is the ウグイス uguisu (Cettia diphone), written with the same character as Chinese, . The bird is celebrated in poetry for its song and has a large number of alternative names. In English it is sometimes referred to as the 'Japanese nightingale'. ウグイス uguisu is also used in the names of other members of the Cettia.

Other names are (native Japanese birds only):

薮雨 or 薮鮫 Stubtail (Urosphena squameiceps)

ムシクイ

Vietnamese: Chích is used for most members of the family. The grass warblers are known as Chiền chiện.

Many names from Vietnamese Wikipedia have been included in the list. These names have no particular authority and represent the often clumsy attempts of an anonymous editor to translate English names into Vietnamese. They are included only for reference.
