Under Sibley and Monroe, the Timaliidae have been placed in the Sylviidae, where they form the tribe Timaliini within the subfamily Sylviinae, with the exception of the laughing thrushes, which are now given a separate subfamily as the Garrulacinae.

1. General names

Chinese:

China is home to a rich variety of Timaliidae, mostly in the south and southwest of the country. With a few exceptions, however, there do not appear to be well-established popular names. Mainland naturalists have developed a rather artificial battery of 'common names' mainly based on the word méi, a general term for the babblers. For detailed correspondences between names and genera, see Notes.

China is home to a large proportion of the world's laughing thrushes, which are called 噪鹛 zào-méi ('chirping babblers') by naturalists. zào is a word referring to the chirping of birds or insects. The liocichlas are known as 薮鹛 sǒu-méi ('marsh babblers'). Taiwan, on the other hand, uses a number of names borrowed from Japanese.

The most famous of the laughing thrushes is Garrulax canorus or Hwamei, known in Chinese as the 画眉 huà-méi (畫眉 in Traditional characters) or 'painted eyebrow', after the distinctive pattern around its eyes. Indeed, the name méi for the laughing thrushes is possibly derived from the word 画眉 huà-méi. Huà-méi is probably the only truly popular name among all the so-called 'common names' of the Garrulax genus and in popular usage is applied to several other members of the genus. The name huà-méi has also been borrowed into Japanese and Vietnamese (see below).

The Leiothrix (notably L. lutea) are popular cage birds known in Chinese as 相思鸟 xiāng-sī-niǎo ('mutual thought birds', better translated as 'birds in love'), from their habit of singing together (or to each other) in separate cages.

The parrotbills (crowtits) are known as 鸦雀 yā-què ('crow finches').

The systematisation of the Mainland names has passed the Taiwanese names by completely, with the result that the latter seem more 'natural' if inaccurate in strictly scientific terms. Taiwanese naturalists refer to the Pomatorhinus as 彎嘴 wān-zuǐ 'curved bills' and the Pnoepyga as a scaly-breasted 'wren' (鷦鷯 jiāoliáo). Stachyris ruficeps is 山紅頭 shān hóng-tóu 'mountain red head', Alcippe brunnea is 頭烏線 tóu wū xiàn 'head black stripe', and several birds are known as 畫眉 huà-méi ('huamei'), after the well-known Melodious laughing thrush (Garrulax canorus).

Japanese:

Only Panurus biarmicus and Paradoxornis webbianus are found in Japan. Some escapees such as Garrulax perspicallatus (the Spectacled or Masked laughing-thrush), have also become naturalised. Many names are based on the word チメドリ chime-dori, written 知目鳥 or literally 'know-see bird'. For want of a better translation, I've rendered this 'chime-bird' in English, keeping in mind that chime should be read chimé. Unmodified, チメドリ chime-dori refers to Alcippe brunnea, the Gould's or Dusky fulvetta, a bird found in Taiwan.

Other general names include:

マルハシ maru-hashi ('curved bill'), probably written 丸嘴, for Pomatorhinus erythrogenys (now P. erythrocnemis) and other scimitar babblers.

ソウシチョウ sōshi-chō for Leiothrix, written 相思鳥, a direct borrowing from Chinese.

シマドリ shima dori for Actinodura (barwings). This presumably means 'striped bird' (縞鳥), although often birds using the descriptor shima are written 島鳥 'island bird'. Unmodified this name refers to the Taiwanese Actinodura morrisoniana.

ダルマエナガ daruma e-naga 'dharma long-handle' (written 達磨柄長) for the genus Paradoxornis (parrotbills). エナガ e-naga itself refers to the Aegithilidae (long-tailed tits). (The word 'Dharma' was originally the name of an Indian Buddhist monk in China. In Japan it has been given to a squat, red doll in the shape of a monk, often made of papier maché, which is weighted in the base and jumps back up when knocked over.)

The laughing thrushes are mostly known as ガビチョウ gabi-chō in Japanese, written 画眉鳥. This is a direct borrowing from Chinese 画眉 huà-méi. Several Taiwanese species have their own distinctive names in Japanese, including Garrulax leucolophus, G. chinensis, G. poecilorhynchus, and Liocichla steerii, dating back to the era of Japanese control (pre-WWII). In addition, G. morrisonianus also has a name borrowed from Taiwanese.

Vietnamese:

The Vietnamese names for the Timaliidae include:

Chuối tiêu (also meaning 'aromatic bananas', connection unclear) for the Pellorneum.

Họa mi (a cognate of Huamei) for Pomotorhinus and a number of other babblers.

Lách tách for the Alcippe (fulvettas).

Mi for the Heterophasia (sibias).

Khướư for most of the other species. Khướư is a general term for the 'laughing thrushes' and 'babblers'.

The laughing thrushes are well-known as cage birds in Vietnam. Three members of the Laughing thrushes have distinctive names:

Garrulax perspicallatus Bò chao or Liếu điếu
Garrulax canorus Họa mi (from Chinese 畫眉 huà-méi)
Garrulax sannio Bò chiêu

The Họa mi is well-known and found in all Vietnamese dictionaries. On the other hand, a search of two monolingual dictionaries (see Sources for their names) turned up only Khướư and Liếu điếu; the two names Bò chao and Bò chiêu were not found.
