Under Sibley-Monroe, the Certhiinae are a subfamily of the Certhiidae. The other East Asian member is the Troglodytinae (wrens). |
1. General names
Chinese: The treecreepers are known as 旋木雀 xuán-mù-què 'tree-circling-sparrows' in Chinese. 雀 què, of course, does not refer exclusively to sparrows but is used for a broad range of (mainly) passerine birds. 旋木雀 xuán-mù-què is not exactly a household name; many dictionaries do not carry the word at all. |
Japanese: The Japanese name for the treecreepers is キバシリ ki-bashiri 'tree-runners', written 木走 in Chinese characters. Only Certhia familiaris is found in Japan. |
Vietnamese: The treecreeper found in Vietnam is the brown-throated treecreeper (Certhia discolor), known as Đuôi cứng 'stiff tail', although this name is not found in most dictionaries. |
