1. General names
Found only in Asia, the tree swift is known in CJV as a 'crested swift'. To indicate the idea of a 'crest', Chinese uses the term 凤头 fèng-tóu meaning 'phoenix-head', Japanese uses カンムリ kanmuri (冠) meaning 'crown', and Vietnamese uses mào meaning 'crest'. |
The Chinese are divided between those who would call the tree swift a 'tree swallow' and those who would call it a 'rain-swallow' (i.e. a swift). |

3. Notes
Hemiprocne longipennis has been split into H. longipennis (Grey-rumped treeswift) and H. coronata (Crested treeswift). The H. coronata is found in India, Southwest China, and the Southeast Asian mainland (excluding Malaya). H. longipennis is found in the islands of Southeast Asia and the southern part of the Southeast Asian mainland. Lim classes the species found in Singapore as H. longipennis (English common name 'Grey-rumped tree swift') but uses the pre-split Chinese name 凤头雨燕 fèng-tóu yǔ-yàn 'phoenix-headed rain-swallow'. The distribution of the Hemiprocnidae in East Asia can be seen at Tzung-Su Ding's Distribution of APODIFORMES in East Asia. |
