1. General names
Chinese: The waxwings are officially known as 太平鸟 tàipíng-niǎo ('peace birds') in China and 連雀 lián-què in Taiwan. They are also known as 十二黄 shí-èr huáng ('twelve yellow') and 十二红 shí-èr hóng ('twelve red') because of the twelve yellow or red feathers at the end of their tails. The two species often flock together. |
Japanese: In Japanese, the waxwings are known as レンジャク renjaku, written 連雀 ('linked sparrow/finch'). |
Vietnamese: The waxwings are not found in Vietnam. One dictionary which gives a Vietnamese name for the bird, the Tư Điển Hán-Việt (汉越词典 or 'Chinese Vietnamese Dictionary') calls it Cánh sáp ('wax wing'), a direct translation of the English. The Japanese waxwing is Cánh sáp Nhật Bản ('Japanese wax wing'). |
