1. General names

Chinese: In Chinese, the whistling ducks are known as 树鸭 shù-yā, meaning 'tree ducks'.

Japanese: In Japanese, the whistling ducks are known as リュウキュウガモ Ryūkyū-gamo, meaning 'Ryukyu duck'. This is written 琉球鴨 in Chinese characters. Ryukyu is the name of the archipelago that forms an arc between Kyushu and Taiwan and includes Okinawa.

Vietnamese: The Vietnamese name for the whistling duck is Le nâu, which roughly means 'brown teal/duck'. Also called the Chim le le (see also Anatidae).
