1. The popular name for the Chinese bulbul is 白头翁 bái-tóu wēng ('white-headed old man'), referring to the white patch on the nape which becomes even whiter as the bird gets older. The popular name is officially used by naturalists in Taiwan. Mainland ornithologists have dropped it in favour of the more regular 白头鹎 bái-tóu bēi ('white-headed bulbul').

The Chinese 白头翁 bái-tóu wēng should not be confused with the Japanese 白頭翁, read hakutō-ō, which refers to the Grey or White-cheeked starling (Sturnus cineraceus).

2. There has been some limited regularisation of the Chinese names. 冠鹎 guàn-bēi ('crested bulbul') is used for the genus Alophoixus. 短脚鹎 duǎn-jiǎo-bēi ('short-legged bulbul') is used for the old Hypsipetes genus, now four genera.

3. The Japanese ヒヨドリ hiyo-dori is also known as ヒヨ hiyo. The -dori, of course, is from tori meaning 'bird'. Both hiyo-dori and hiyo are written 鵯.
