Editions of Le Petit Prince in English, Chinese, Japanese, and Vietnamese used in this site

 

The following are publishing details of the versions of Le petit prince that I have used in this site. I do not have the original copies of the French version, Woods' English version, or Howard's English version. For these, I have primarily relied on versions included with the Chinese or Vietnamese translations. One Chinese version is from a website and I do not have bibliographical details other than the website link. I have taken one quotation from Dr Ralf Hammecke's site about Le Petit Prince in translation.

The table almost acts as a cross-section of the publishing industry in these countries.

The Mainland Chinese industry is in many ways new, brash, and aggressive. Publishers can be found all around the country, in Beijing, Shanghai, and regional cities large and small. In the scramble to publish and make a killing, standards are not always very high. All that's needed is someone who can churn out a new translation, slightly modify an earlier translation and put it under another person's name, or 'retell' the original story, and presto, you have your own version of a bestseller! More recently many have new illustrations that are completely different from the originals. Most of the new illustrations squarely position the book as a children's story. As with foreign names in Chinese in general, Saint-Exupéry's name has not been fully standardised.

* Chinese versions were bought in bookshops in China (north and south). About five (some not used) were ordered through Dang Dang.

Taiwan is a little more staid. The industry is based in Taipei and Saint-Exupéry's drawings are seen more often.

* Taiwanese versions were bought in bookshops in Macau and Hong Kong as well as from http://www.book4u.com.tw. One Hong Kong version was kindly supplied by KC Tang.

By contrast, the Japanese publishing industry is completely centred on Tokyo and many of the names are very old and well established. All of the translations are based on the French (following Naitō's example) and all but one use Saint-Exupéry's drawings.

A spate of new translations appeared in 2005-2006 after the copyright expired. One issue was the title -- whether to follow the title made famous by Naitō's 1953 translation, 星の王子さま Hoshi no Ōji-sama, 'The Prince from a Star', or come up with a new title. Eventually, seven followed the Iwanami title. Two used the old title but called it 'newly translated' (新訳 shin'yaku). Three used titles literally meaning 'The Little Prince' (one also had a subtitle noting that it was a 'new translation of 'The Prince from a Star'). One tried to get the best of both worlds by calling itself 'The Little Prince from a Star'. And one used the French title transliterated into Japanese, プチ・プランス Puchi Puransu, also with a subtitle saying it was a new translation of 'Prince from a Star'.

There are fewer translations of 'The Little Prince' into Vietnamese. Publishers are mainly found in the two main cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh (Saigon). Several translations, however, have appeared not in Vietnam but overseas (including the Bui Giang translation, which seems to have been published in France). The book's title has not been fully standardised, either.
